Horse sense to be covered at Rutgers conference

Knowledge is Horse Power,” the theme of the Horses 2009 educational conference at Rutgers, takes on even more significance as equestrians struggle to make ends meet during the economic downturn.

“When you think about it, knowledge equates to power. When you have knowledge about something, you feel empowered and informed … you know you will be able to make an educated decision,” said Karyn Malinowski, director of Rutgers Equine Science Center, the host of the March 28-29 seminar.

It features a wide variety of speakers, including Brendan Furlong of Oldwick, the U.S. eventing team veterinarian, discussing lameness; David Horohov of the University of Kentucky’s Gluck Center on vaccines and immunology and Jeannine Berger from the University of California, Davis, whose topic is behavioral issues. Other experts will present sessions on everything from footing to the economics of horsekeeping; nutrition, holistic hoofcare and contracts, liability and insurance. After their presentations, speakers will be available in break-out rooms for questions from those interested in exploring their topics further….
