The finest hour in the history of American combined driving came on a crisp autumn weekend in Gladstone 16 years ago, courtesy of Finn Caspersen.
The 1993 World Pairs Driving Championship, the discipline’s first international title meet to be staged by the U.S., received the acclaim of royalty, driving fans and those who simply found themselves enchanted with a different kind of sporting event.
As a product of Mr. Caspersen’s sweeping vision and determination, the brilliantly presented championship had all the right trappings — plenty of pomp, a gala party, colorful exhibitions and even the presence of Great Britain’s Prince Phillip.
